  • The Orchestra Collection at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts / Connor Bowman, NYPLPA
    The presenter gave an overview of the orchestra library at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, and discussed the workflow for reorganization of the collection.
  • Going Virtual: Implementing an Institutional Digital Repository at the Manhattan School
    of Music / Jeremiah Kamtman, MSM
    The presenter discussed the process of selecting and setting up CONTENTdm as a digital repository for MSM’s student theses.
  • Show and Tell: Louis Armstrong Archive / Ricky Ricardi, LAHM
    The presenter discussed the highlights of Louis Armstrong’s career, showcasing selections from the archives, and ended with a tour of the Louis Armstrong House Museum.

  • Jay Gorney and the Beginnings of Education for Musical Theatre Writers / Bret McCandless, Rutgers Univesity
    Presenter discussed his research on the early history of musical theater education, focusing on the teaching career of film and stage writer Jay Gorney, first at the New
    School and later at the American Theater Wing.
  • Moving in Midtown: The Challenges of Moving a Library Collection in Manhattan / Sara White, Catherine Hammer, AMDA

    The AMDA library, where this meeting was located, had recently moved from several blocks away. The presenters described the process and challenges of moving the collection with limited time and resources.

Presentations:

  • George Avakian and Anahid Ajemian Audio Description Project / Matthew Snyder, Archivist/Specialist II, NYPL
    After providing a biography of Avakian and Ajemian, the presenter played a whole assortment of newly digitized, never released audio clips from the collection.
  • Updates on the Hatch-Billops Digitization Project / Michael Crowley, Music Librarian, City College of New York
    Presenter discussed a recent Grammy-funded digital preservation and curation project, digitizing 242 tapes containing 329 hours of audio of oral histories and music of prominent black artists across all disciplines.
  • Special Presentation: Selection of Archival Materials / Gabryel Smith, Director, Archives and Exhibitions, New York Philharmonic
    Display and discussion of archival materials from the time of Gustav Mahler’s tenure as Music Director of the Philharmonic, including scores with his markings and his letters to orchestra members.

    After giving some background and history of the collection and the cabinets that house it, the presenter discusses issues relating to shelving, filing, and labeling the collection. He concludes by outlining the institution’s future plans for processing the collection to make it accessible.

Announcements:

  • Matthew Snyder announces the publication of Archival Description of Notated Music, which he worked on. He described the history of this project, including its inception, MLA’s involvement, and the appendix published by SAA as the first ever subject-specific DACS supplement.
  • Leonard Lehrman discusses his recent work on documenting civil rights songs; recommends newly published biographies of interest; and announces his upcoming virtual Beethoven concerts.
