Getting to the Institute of Jazz Studies:

The Institute of Jazz Studies is located on the 4th floor of the John Cotton Dana Library on the campus of Rutgers University-Newark. All visitors will be required to show a government-issued ID to the security guard at the front desk of the library. The street address is 185 University Ave., Newark, NJ 07102, but the entrance is not located on University Ave. and instead faces west towards a grassy pedestrian plaza and the Paul Robeson Campus Center.

From NY Penn Station, take NJ Transit Montclair-Boonton or Morris-Essex line to Newark Broad Street. Walk south on University (towards downtown) about three blocks to Bleeker Street and turn right. There is a small parking lot with handicap spaces off of Bleeker to the south that leads to the library entrance. If you come to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., you’ve walked too far.

If you take the PATH to Newark, take the NJ Transit light rail from Newark Penn Station to Washington Street (or just walk from Penn Station; it’s about a mile). The light rail underground fare is only $0.75, but you must validate your ticket at the machine at Newark Penn Station. The entrance to the Light Rail at Newark Penn Station is located by the McDonald’s. From the Washington Street Station, walk west (away from downtown) on Raymond Blvd. for a short while and at the next traffic light, turn right (north) on University Avenue. Walk two blocks and then before you come to Bleeker St, walk up the stairs on the west side of the street under the “Rutgers-Newark” arch, which lead directly to the back of the library. You will need to walk around the building to the left (south) to get to the entrance.

You can’t miss the entrance to Dana Library once you’re there: it is asymmetrical and covered in magenta-colored metal tiles.

Metered street parking is usually available during summer session on Bleeker Street and can be paid with quarters or the ParkMobile app, or there are paid parking lots located nearby.

I look forward to seeing everyone on Friday!

Best,

Sara White
